The Wanderer, the shortest of the Highlander family of rides, follows the Bristol Valley, Canandaigua Lakeshore, and parts of the Finger Lakes wine country. The course continues to provide an alternative that maximizes rider enjoyment over a recreational-rider friendly short course of 37 miles, showing riders many of the same views enjoyed by riders on the longer tours.
The new Wanderer has been extended to 37 miles, but we can suggest options to shorten the course for those less experinced. The new course has eliminated the long climb up Miller Hill and has added the scenic route on CR-12, with great views of Canandaigua Lake. The aid station on CR-12 is located at a scenic overlook with a panoramic view of the lake, the Naples valley and the surrounding Hills. The course continues, following the Lowlander, with a short climb up Rhine Street and then on a gently rolling rural road and onto CR-33/West Hollow Rd. The wide shouldered CR-33 is a long gentle climb, rewarded by a long gentle descent onto CR-34 and then NY-64 back to Bristol Mountain.
This course is perfect for those that are not sure they want to tackle a long event, families, recreational riders, or anyone looking to check this thing called the 'Highlander Cycle Tour' out. Of course, riders will still enjoy all the full suite of rider amenities, the camaraderie, the food to go with the lighter challenge.
The route is marked by white chevrons on the pavement. Where the course deviates from the Lowlander (also marked with white chevrons) it is indicated with an "W".
The aerial view of the Wanderer on the left is from Google Earth. If you have a broadband connection, you can take a virtual tour of the Waderer ride by going to this site, this will open a google map of the Wanderer course. Click the Summary Tab, scroll down and click on the text "View in Google Earth". This will download a "kml" file. Opening the file will launch Google Earth (provided you have installed it on your computer) with the Wanderer course loaded in "places". Just follow the Google Earth instructions on touring. Note, the Google Earth aerial images for much of the route, unfortunately, has low res image of the terrain, the darker colored areas in the image on the left, so setting the tour elevation at less than 4000 m is useless. But the lightly colored areas, along CR-12 are high res so you can zoom down and get a real feel for the ride.
