TOUR RIDES

2009 HIGHLANDER CYCLING TOUR WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 11-12, 2009

For our 10th Anniversary the Highlander Cyle Tours have revised with new routes!

The Highlander Cycling Tour consists of a choice of five rides on a Saturday in mid September. The rides are located in the scenic and hilly Finger Lakes region of upstate New York around the time of wine festivals and the beginning of fall foliage. In addition there are the optional 5 mile Mountain Prologue Individual Time Trial and the inaugural 22 mile Mountain Prologue Team Time Trial on Friday afternoon/evening. SAG stops are frequent and well stocked. Road rides are well marked on paved roads with light vehicle traffic.

The new 2009 Highlander Ride will visit some new, exciting and intense terrain in the Bristol Highlands. For the first time in its history, the Highlander will visit five lakes and climb the mountains separating them. The Highlander will summit mountain passes such as Groveland Hill, Sliker Hill, Niver, Purcell Hill and Burch Hill. The Tour will visit new Towns such as Springwater, Scottsburgh, and Groveland Station. But lest ye Highlander fans despair, the Tour will remain true to its core and tackle many of the hallmark climbs of the first decade. Fabled climbs such as Le Grand Egypt, Mont. Ste. Millers, the now legendary steeps (23% grade) of Le Alpe de Bopple and the incomparable Col de Gannett, have all become Highlander staples.

The Lowlander century ride has also been revised. In addition to the scenic rides and climbs around Canandaguia and Honeoye Lakes, the Lowlander will tour parts of the Southern Tier, including scenic valleys such as Neils Creek (Ct Rt-6) and Twelve Mile Creek (Ct Rt-9). The Midlander and Wanderer rides have also been revised.

New in 2009 is a Mountain Prologue Team Time Trial, which pits two person teams on a 22 mile circuit that includes three steep climbs, CR33, Egypt Hill and ending of course on top of Gannett.

Additionaly we now provide links to our routes on Google maps. These google map route sites enable riders with GPS units on their bikes to download the routes. You can also use Google Earth for a virtual tour of the ride.

Below are brief ride descriptions with links to further details and map:

HIGHLANDER: This is the premier 105 mile century featuring over 10,000 feet of climbing in 18 separate climbs, 8 of which climb 1-2 miles with grades ranging between 9-23%. The riders will visit five lakes and climb the mountains separating them. Click on the highlighted text for detailed information about the new, revised Highlander Tour.
MIDLANDER: The metric (72 miles) century follows the fist and last thirds of the above route and featuring over 7000 feet of climbing.  Click on Midlander Tour for more detailed information and maps.
LOWLANDER: A flatter 102-mile century (7,000 feet eliminating the 8 steepest climbs of the Highlander), runs past three lakes and through scenic valleys numerous villages, hamlets and vineyards. For more detailed information and maps click on Lowlander Tour.
WANDERER: This ride has been revised to accommodates riders of all levels on a fun, less challenging course. The full 37 mile ride involves 2300 feet of climbing, but we also suggest options to shorten for the less experienced. Riders will enjoy the same amenities and many of the same scenic views as the longer riders. See detailed information about the Wanderer Tour.
MOUNTAINEER: A 40K off-road challenge featuring 7,000 feet of climbing, including climbs up all of the areas 2,000 foot peaks. Ride is well-marked on (mostly) single track trails, traversing two ski areas. See detailed information about the Mountaineer Tour.
PROLOGUE TIME TRIALS: The Friday Time trial offers two choices: The classic 5 mile mountain time trial course features a gut wrenching 800 foot climb in the last mile. Or a new two person Team Time Trial featuring two major climbs for a total 3000 ft in 22 miles. See detailed information about the Time Trial.
