Along with the Highlander, the Lowlander Century has gained a popular following in the Highlander weekend tour.  It is an incredibly scenic century for the rider who enjoys a challenge but not necessarily as much vertical and steep climbing as the Highlander. The revised Lowlander has over 7000 feet of climbing in 102 miles but eliminates the Highlander’s steepest climbs.

Designed to emphasize the views and the flats as much as possible, this course takes riders along three lake shores, hill tops with wide vistas of the Bristol hills and valleys, down scenic valleys, past two ski resorts, many vineyards and wanders through several quaint towns and hamlets.

The revised route keeps the original first half but from Honeoye Village adds a climbs up Canadice Hill which offers a wide vista of the Bristol countryside. This is followed by a long smooth descent down to Canadice Lake road, then south along the secluded lake road and Stutt street into the village of Wayland and the southern tier. In Wayland there is a corner gas station, Rts 15 and 21, that has food and facilities if you need.

The route proceeds south, climbing on NY-21, to Neils Creek road, which follows a valley, in a gently descending ride. In the hamlet of Walace there is an aid station at this 77 mile point. The route continues north on Twelve Mile Creek road, another favorite valley ride of the local riders. Although it is a climb up the creek valley, it is so gentle, you never notice it over the 10.5 mile distance. At Ingleside you pick up NY-53 which takes you down to Naples. It is an exhilirating coast down, but take care to control your speed as the road twists approaching Naples and there is traffic. From Naples the course climbs up county road 12, which provides a scenic view of Canandaguia Lake, valley and surrounding hills. The aid station is at a scenic overlook, good place to take photos.

The suggested ride time is 6-7 hours. The route is marked by white chevrons on the pavement. Where it deviates from the Wanderer (also marked with white shevrons) it is indicated with an "L".

You can open and save printable PDF* Lowlander route maps and cue sheet:

Bike Route Toaster is one of many websites which produces route maps using Google maps. It is useful for riders with GPS units as you can download the route to your GPS and can ride without fussing with maps or cue sheets. Another useful feature is they provide a Google Earth route document that you can use to do a virtual tour. For instructions on how to get the Google Earth tour go to the Wandered page. Here is the Lowlander tour link.
